Leaving something incomplete makes it more interesting
and gives the feeling of space for it to grow.
Yoshiba Kenko (1283-1350; Tsurezuregusa – Essays in Idleness)

Beneath the Hotel lie eight ancient cisterns, underground, bell-shaped structures that reveal the ancient water supply system, an excellent example of sustainable development. Rain and spring water was channelled along gutters, drainpipes and little channels into the cisterns that can be found in the homes and neighbourhoods.

Walking through the uneasy silence of a cave, you gradually get used to the light of these spaces and it’s like being sucked back into another dimension, where you have the chance to intimately catch the most profound, ancestral meaning of these places and of this ancient land. At the centre will be a space to feed the mind and feel an intense sense of wellbeing. The cisterns that can be accessed via incredibly impressive, narrow, difficult passages today hold temporary exhibitions and permanent works, such as the installation of the artist Alfredo Pirri, IDRA (Istituto di Ricerca Anime) in the "Matera Alberga, Welcoming Art” project as part of the 2019 Matera European Capital of Culture programme.

Soon our cisterns will welcome the SPAn (Salus Per Animam), an interior wellbeing path that exalts Matera's unusual qualities to give the guest some unforgettable experiences.
